1  2

For equivalent academic qualifications or when crossing disciplines, make-up courses at undergraduate and graduate levels may be required

1.Training Structure

 (1)Academic activities and ideological education"

During their graduate studies, students are required to participate in 8 or more academic activities and ideological education events, including at least 1 session of ideological and political education activities. Each student is also required to give 1 academic presentation. After the completion and submission, the student earns 1 credit subject to the supervisor's approval.

(2)Doctor Comprehensive Examination

1. The comprehensive examination mainly assesses the basic and specialized knowledge of the Ph.D. candidate, as well as their ability to apply this knowledge for solving problems. It also evaluates whether they possess the fundamental qualities necessary for conducting innovative research, serving as an essential preparatory stage for topic selection and dissertation proposal defense. This segment should take place after the completion of coursework and before the commencement of the dissertation.

2. The comprehensive examination is organized by the graduate office of the college and held annually in the fall semester. It consists of two parts: a written exam and an interview. The written exam, based on the propositions of the secondary disciplines, primarily assesses whether graduate students have a solid and comprehensive knowledge in their discipline. The interview focuses on delivering an academic report on given topics and evaluates students' overall research capabilities, and the students are ranked by their secondary disciplines based on their performance. If the secondary discipline determines that the student’s performance in both the written exam and interview does not meet the basic requirements for pursuing a Ph.D, the student must participate in a re-examination to determine whether they have the ability to continue their Ph.D. studies.

Each Ph.D. student may participate in the comprehensive examination with the maximum of 2 times. If a student fails to pass after two attempts, they will be subject to the school's relevant regulations regarding redirection or dismissal.

(3)Literature Review and Topic Proposal

After admission to graduate school, students should, under the guidance of their supervisor, conduct literature reviews, and determine their thesis research topics, then complete their topic proposals. For doctor students, the topic proposal should be completed after passing the comprehensive examination. Regular doctor students should complete and submit their topic proposals via the MIS system for supervisor approval by the end of the third semester, while direct Doctor students should do so by the end of the fourth semester (special cases may be extended to the fifth semester). Master's students should complete and submit their topic proposals via the MIS system for supervisor approval within the third semester. Graduate students participating in joint international programs or academic exchanges may conduct their topic proposals via remote video conferencing within the specified timeframe.

The literature review and topic proposal for graduate students should include:

a) The research significance of the topic and an analysis of the current status both domestically and internationally.

b) The research objectives, content, and key issues to be addressed.

c) The research methods, technical routes, experimental plans, and feasibility studies.

d) The innovation of the topic.

e) The planned schedule, expected progress, and anticipated outcomes.

f) Existing works related to the topic, existing research results, and achievements.

For Ph.D. students, the topic direction of the thesis should be selected from the forefront of electrical engineering, or interdisciplinary fields, or key technological areas that promote national economic development, which have advanced scientific and technological results. It should fully consider the possibility of making innovative achievements within the timeframe of the thesis work. For those conducting their Ph.D. thesis work in conjunction with industry collaboration projects (horizontal topics), strict scrutiny should be applied to avoid low-level repetitive work.

The topic proposal for graduate thesis should be conducted openly within the scope of the discipline or related disciplines. For Ph.D. students, the topic proposal is evaluated by an assessment committee composed of 3-5 experts organized by the supervisor or department/center. For master's students, the topic proposal is uniformly organized by each department/center. The assessment committee for Ph.D. students' topic proposals should ideally consist of Ph.D. supervisors, while the assessment committee for master's students' topic proposals should consist of master's supervisors. Members of the assessment committee may also include experts from research institutes or large enterprises. The assessment committee must clearly state whether the topic proposal has been approved. If it is not approved, the student must resubmit the topic proposal one month later. For interdisciplinary thesis topics, relevant experts from related disciplines should be invited to participate. If there are significant changes in the direction of the thesis topic during the research process, a new topic proposal should be prepared.

The main content of the topic proposal should be no less than 5000 words. Upon approval of the topic proposal, the student earns 1 credit.

(4)Mid-term assessment of graduate students

During the mid-term of the thesis work, each department (or center) organizes an assessment and evaluation of graduate students' ideological and political status, coursework, and thesis topic. The focus is on examining the progress of the student's thesis work, the level of innovation, and their attitude towards work. A conclusion of either "pass" or "fail" is given, and those who do not pass will be handled according to relevant school regulations. The mid-term assessment for master's students is generally completed before the end of the third semester, while for Ph.D. students, it is generally completed before the end of the fourth semester.

(5)Innovation and Entrepreneurship Practice

Entrepreneurial practice activities for graduate students can be considered qualified under any of the following circumstances:

1.Participating in various innovation and entrepreneurship competitions organized by the school and winning corresponding awards.

2.Participating in national/provincial-level university student entrepreneurship practice projects and winning corresponding awards or successfully completing the project.

3.Participating in holiday innovation and entrepreneurship training camps organized by the school and successfully completing the program.

4 Participating in entrepreneurship competitions organized by the school and obtaining a qualified certification.

5. Participating in voluntary work, teaching support, agricultural support, poverty alleviation, etc.

6. Attending innovation and entrepreneurship lectures five times or more.

7.Other activities recognized by the college as innovation and entrepreneurship practice activities.

After relevant units have certified the above circumstances, they should be submitted to the graduate office for record. Upon successful completion of this section, the student earns 1 credit.

(6)Pre-defense of graduate students

aPre-defense for doctoral students

The pre-defense of a doctoral dissertation is an important collective guidance process before the formal defense, that takes place after completing all scheduled dissertation work and drafting the initial version of the dissertation. It plays as a crucial role in further revising and improving the content of the doctoral dissertation, thereby enhancing its quality.

The pre-defense is typically scheduled within one month before the formal dissertation defense, after passing the mid-term examination of the dissertation. It should be conducted openly. Upon the student's application and the supervisor's approval, a pre-defense committee consisting of five relevant disciplinary experts, with a chairman (the student's supervisor cannot serve as the chairman but may be a committee member), is organized by the department, center, or supervisor. Three days before the pre-defense, the doctoral student must submit the dissertation, topic proposal, academic achievements, and other relevant materials to the pre-defense committee for review.

The pre-defense is chaired by the committee chairman. Besides providing a detailed overview of the dissertation's contents, the doctoral student must focus on demonstrating the innovation and key conclusions of the dissertation. The supervisor should also provide a comprehensive introduction to the student's research.

The pre-defense committee should question the dissertation based on the topic proposal and other materials. They evaluate the innovation and academic level of the dissertation, the amount of work completed, the theoretical and experimental research basis, research outcomes, key conclusions, etc., anonymously. Particularly, they should adhere to a system of innovative veto. After the pre-defense, they make one of three conclusions: pass, basic pass, or fail.

Doctoral students who pass the pre-defense can apply for the formal dissertation defense after finalizing the dissertation. Those who receive a basic pass should revise the dissertation according to the pre-defense committee's suggestions for at least one month. After the supervisor's review and approval, they can apply for the formal dissertation defense, providing a written explanation of the dissertation revisions at the time of application.

Those who fail the pre-defense should revise the dissertation for at least three months, obtain the supervisor's approval, and reorganize the pre-defense. Only after passing the reorganized pre-defense can they apply for the formal dissertation defense, providing a written explanation of the dissertation revisions at the time of application.

bPre-defense for master students

For a master's student pre-defense, it should be organized by each department or center one month before the formal defense. Master students should carefully revise their thesis based on the comments and suggestions from the pre-defense committee. After the supervisor and pre-defense chairman review and approve the revisions, they can proceed to request the formal defense. Students who do not pass the pre-defense will follow the supplementary regulations outlined in the "Supplementary Provisions for Pre-defense, Review, and Defense of Master's Thesis in the School of Electrical Engineering."

(7)International Academic Exchanges

Regarding international academic exchanges, doctoral students are required to participate in at least one international academic conference and give an oral presentation.

5. Methods of Guidance for Graduate Education

1.Both academic master and doctoral students are under the guidance of supervisors, who may also lead guidance groups. The training and guidance plan for graduate students is collectively developed by the department or center where the graduate student belongs, and the supervisor (group) is responsible for specific guidance.

2. Supervisors (or groups) are responsible for the daily management of graduate students, fostering academic integrity and ethics, and developing reasonable and scientific study plans. They should also enhance the cultivation of creative thinking skills and improve students' comprehensive abilities in self-learning, hands-on practice, expression, writing, and innovation.
