School of Electrical Engineering Secures First-Ever National Natural Science Foundation Youth Student Basic Research Project

Date: December 17, 2024

Recently, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) announced the approval list for the 2024 National Natural Science Foundation Youth Student Basic Research Project (Doctoral Students). A project led by Lin Chengrong, a doctoral student from our school, was granted funding of RMB 300,000, marking the school’s first-ever success in securing this prestigious award.

Lin Chengrong, a 2021 doctoral candidate under the supervision of Professor Hu Bo, has published 10 SCI/EI-indexed papers (including 6 in CAS TOP journals) as first author, with notable publications in IEEE Transactions. His accolades include the Roy Billinton Best Paper Award and the Silver Medal at the 48th Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions. His funded project, “Security Domain Modeling and Defense Methods for Power Systems Against Composite Information Attacks”, addresses the growing threat of composite information attacks on power systems. The research aims to develop unified characterization and defense strategies to ensure secure and reliable power grid operations.

The NSFC Youth Student Basic Research Project (Doctoral Students) was first piloted in 2023. It targets exceptional doctoral candidates who demonstrate strong research potential, academic rigor, and the capacity to balance research with broader scientific contributions. The selection follows a “nomination + evaluation” model, involving multiple stages: individual application, university nomination, NSFC peer review, and panel review, ensuring only the most outstanding projects receive funding.

2024 marks Chongqing University’s inaugural year of applying for this program. Both the university and the school prioritized the initiative, organizing expert consultations and rigorous preparatory support. For projects advancing to the final review stage, the school and faculty mentors conducted multi-round mock defenses, offering comprehensive guidance on presentation content, Q&A preparation, and defense techniques, ultimately contributing to the project’s successful approval.
